How-To: Save money & make money!

Post by MrRogers »

Ok guys, so here is my own personal way to save money in the long term and make money back in doing things this way, my way, the right way.

If you own your own house then this is the best way to save the most money possible. If you rent then you can still do these things but it all depends on your situation, etc.

1. Electricity: Solar Panels.

If you own your house, then this is the absolute must have for long term money savings, as well as investment in to your homes equity value. Having Solar Panels installed will raise your homes value between 18%-22% of your homes current value. Some solar companies will install the panels for free if you agree to let them have back the unused electricity in exchange you get to use the generated electricity. Some companies lease them to you for 25 years, then after 25 years the panels then belong to the home owner, so any unused electricity gets sold back to the electric company, so in essence you will profit from your power company rather than pay them. Which is what we would ideally want to do anyways.

2. Television: Free To Air (FTA)

So some of you know from back in the day of the DirecTV football card hacking, loader, etc. Black boxes and such, then when things went digital people assumed that it was over and those people couldn't be more wrong.

FTA has been around now for a good while. Instead of it being used for DirecTV, it is now exclusively used on DishNET. You do not need to have DishNET service to do this, you just need to buy the Dish 500 with Dual LNB and a good FTA receiver. The best ones are: The Linkbox 8000HD Local & Dreamlink HD T5 with DL100. You can then load the hacked bin file to it to access the secret menu to input your server, the server costs a monthly subscription, or yearly. The bin files use to be uploaded whenever there was an outage or it needed to be updated to get channels back, now the server costs money but it is very affordable and you get pretty much everything. For 1 year through say fishtv it is about $80, and you get literally EVERYTHING channel wise - with the exception of some of the porn channels. Both of these receivers also come DVR capable, so if you hook up an external HDD then you can record your shows, movies, etc :) Everything including premiums, and ppv channels work, other than that you get everything on satellites 110 and 119. You can look through the channel lineup on the lyngsat website. You will get over 700 channels.

3. Television: AppleTV 2

If you don't want to pay the yearly subscription for television with FTA, or if you want a substitute or something additional I recommend very highly to get a Jailbroken AppleTV 2. You can find them on ebay for more or less $200, and they generally have 1channel, IceFilms, or other addons installed that let you watch all tv shows, movies, porns, etc. And it is up to date everyday so if you want to see a new episode of a show that just came out, it will be on there. It also helps out alot too because you can fast forward, pause, rewind etc. And you won't ever miss anything. Also, it also have a YouTube addon, as well as Netflix so you can pretty much use it for anything related to television. It works via wireless, so as long as you have a router and internet, you can watch tv :)

3. Internet: Cable Internet

- I removed this portion for site security -

4. Food: Gardening

Ok, so many of you probably buy your produce and fruit from your local grocery store. Which is just retarded if you have a yard to grow your own.

Buy non-gmo seeds on ebay. You can find seed packs that have pretty much everything your looking for. Some though, don't have fruit seeds included so I buy them separate, like watermelon, raspberries, grapes, blueberries, etc. Some vegetables also won't be included such as corn, carrots, and others.

The best time to plant is at the end of May in most areas. And you just need to designate a small area of your yard to grow. You will be amazed at how much food you will get and for so little money. For instance, corn is VERY EASY to grow, and it is very cheap for the seeds ($1.50 for 25+ seeds), so say you plant all 25 seeds, each plant will have at least 5 ears of corn on it, that is 125 ears of corn for $1.50...) you really can't compete with that if your a grocery store, and you know it will be fresh and not have pesticides on it. As far as other things, if you live up north, I suggest going to a local nursery that sells apples, pumpkins, apple cider, etc. And purchasing a Gala or, Red Delicious apple tree from them and planting that in your yard. Year after year you will have apples for snacks, etc. The first year or two it may not yield anything because it needs time to grow but once it starts producing it will keep producing - planting just an apple seed will not work, they require cross pollenation of another apple tree variety. But the ones from nurseries often have a piece of another tree tied in to it that grows around it so the tree that you buy will be self-pollenating. This is the best option for everyone, for an abundance of food, money saving, and longer living.

5. Heating: Insulate your house

The topic is pretty self explanatory, you want to insulate your house the best that you possibly can to keep heat/air conditioning from escaping. This in turn will lower your electric usage/gas usage. Blown in insulation is relatively cheap & effective.

Another way to better insulate your house would be to have efficient triple paned windows installed, which do cost money up front, but in the long term the house will save you money by spending this money up front. Everything in this thread is intended for long term savings. Over time all of these things will more than pay for themselves.

6. Laundry Detergent: Make your own

For less than $12 you can have 5 gallons that lasts you 4-8 months. I usually make enough to last a year. This works for both regular washers and HE washing machines, it is safe :)

So here's what you will need (you can use different brands):

- 1 x bar of Fels-Naptha Soap
- 1 x box of Borax Detergent Booster
- 1 x box of Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
- 1 x 5 gallon bucket (Home Depot sells them with lids)
- 1 x cheese grater
- 1 x cooking pot that you wont miss
- 1 x wooden spoon to mix it

So what you need to do first is to grate the soap in to the pot, then add 4 cups of water - mix it in with the wooden spoon. Then simmer it until the soap is dissolved (mostly) - while stirring frequently so the soap doesn't stick to the bottom, no matter what you will have clumping so expect it to happen. The soap will not completely dissolve, but as long as you bring it to a boil it's fine.

Take the 5 gallon bucket and fill 4.5 gallons of it with hot tap water. Then pour in the boiling soap water, add 3/4 cup of Borax, 1 cup of Arm & Hammer. Then stir everything in the bucket with the spoon. You can top it off with more hot tap water. Let sit for 24 hours. It will be gelatin like when it is ready to use, like normal laundry detergent but a bit thicker. Use 1/2 to 3/4 of a cup per load.

7. Fabric Softener: Make your own dryer sheets

Alright, so now that you have mastered the laundry detergent, you now want to save money on making your clothes smell awesome, for a long time.

Here's what you'll need:

1 x Tupperware container with lid (enough to hold 4 cups)
2 x dish sponges
1 x cup of Downy, or Snuggle Fabric Softener
2 x cups of water

So this is very easy and you probably already have what you need to make this, just pour 2 cups of water in to the Tupperware container, then add 1 cup of your fabric softener, put the sponges in and thoroughly soak them, then ring them out back in to the container as well as possible. Toss the sponge in with your clothes in the dryer, the solution you made should last you at least 6 months depending on how much laundry you do and how well you ring out the sponge. If you do this, then you don't need to add fabric softener to the washer, but you can for a more pronounced smell/softness.

Enjoy :) If you liked any of these things, please be sure to rate/like this thread! And spread the info!

8. Other ways to save electricity

1. Have each person in your household use the same towel to dry off everyday - If you take a shower everyday, don't throw the towel in the hamper when your done with it. Put it on the radiator/heater to dry it out, or if you live in a nicer climate area, or if it simply nice out put it outside to dry. By doing this you will save on washing and drying costs SIGNIFICANTLY. You should only really need to wash/dry your clothes. Ideally for clothes you can just wash them, then dry them outside on a line or on a porch railing in your backyard if you want to save on electricity. By doing this, you can save anywhere from $30-$60 a month at least on your electric bill by not using the dryer, and I am talking about an energy efficient dryer. If you have a power hog, the savings would be more.

Also by shutting off computers, lights, fans, electronics will save on your monthly electric bill - not standby mode, completely off where the power supply is not on. It will save alot if you add it all up and at the end of one month, you will see that you over-use electricity as opposed to shutting things off when not using them, unplugging is the best way to save. With the rising costs of electricity every year and companies switching over and getting crazy bonuses to their CEO's we are forced to find ways to cut them out or to minimize loss on our end, and doing things this way is a good start. The electric companies are more of a threat than they are given credit for, over time we are losing ALOT of money unnecessarily. So if you can, even if you live with your parents of someone else who pays the bill, at least do these things to help them save, I am sure they will be grateful if you can help them out - and practice good habits to save.

Also, instead of always using the dishwasher. Wash your dishes in the sink to save on electricity.
