I'm still using a SB 5101U Motorola SurfBoard. A solid Docsis 2.0 modem capable of running around 38 Mbps Maximum. I get mine to run 30 Mbps for 19.99/month from Xfinity. That's fast enuf - some peeps are still using 1-2 Mbps DSL on the cheeps. I used to use free, unencrypted WIFI hotspots because I'm a cheapskate. Don't like to pay the freight.
